The book attempts to elucidate how nature affects us aesthetically "by pointing out the principles upon which the mind is gratified and refined through the organs of vision, by an operation of the laws of Nature with a further attempt to systematize these principles." David Ramsay Hay was a Scottish artist, interior decorator and colour theorist. He decorated Abbotsford for Sir Walter Scott and Holyroodhouse for Queen Victoria. He wrote a number of works on colour harmony and beauty.
