A good copy in dark green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and upper board. Bevelled edges. Pp.xix,372 + 32pp. adverts. Consists of a series of essays with such titles as "New Theories of Emotional Expression", "The Genesis of the Free-Will Doctrine", "On the Possibility of a Science of Aesthetics" etc.

Hardback. Publisher's turquoise cloth with title in dark blue on spine. Some mottling to the cloth. No inscriptions. Faint tape marks on front and rear free endpapers. Many black and white illustrations. 229 pages. Chip from page 69/70 means a few words have been lost. Very good illustrated dustwrapper which is price-clipped and is protected in a removable cover. This is a history of torture, written in a sardonic vein with liberal quotations from historical sources and with many illustrations reproduced from rare old engravings and woodcuts. Looks a lovely copy at first sight but with the defects mentioned.

A good copy in greenish-blue pebbled cloth. A piece of the cloth surface has come off at the spine ends (approx. 2.5 centimetres at bottom of spine). Label on front end-paper intimates the book was presented to the Ravenstonedale library in 1893 and the library rules are pasted onto the rear end-paper but there are no stamps. Pp.xxiv,113. An early treatise advocating the abolition of capital punishment.
